What the heck is Ansible anyways?
A beginner-friendly introduction to Ansible automation.
Ansible is an open-source IT automation engine, or as I like to call it, "the thing that saves you from typing the same commands across 50 servers."
Why Use Ansible?
- Agentless: No background daemons or custom agents required on target nodes. It orchestrates over standard SSH on Linux and WinRM on Windows.
- Declarative & Idempotent: Playbooks describe desired system state rather than sequential commands; re-running tasks does not mutate already-configured resources.
- Human-Readable YAML: Tasks and roles are organized using clear YAML syntax that acts as living infrastructure documentation.
Code Example: Deploying Nginx
Here is a standard idempotent task to install and configure an Nginx web server:
- name: Install Nginx web server
apt:
name: nginx
state: present
update_cache: yes
- name: Ensure Nginx is running and enabled
service:
name: nginx
state: started
enabled: yes
